Your role in this position will be to initiate and drive technology and/or product development using in-depth technical expertise in a specific area or a broad range of skills in a technical field. In this role you will be responsible for transformer and magnetic component specification in Power Protection/Smart Power/Electrical in Richmond Virginia.You will work on an agile team to develop new Power Distribution products as well as provide technical leadership in the area of innovation of relevant components of transformers, inductors, and EMI.

Your responsibilities
- Design and development of magnetic components for power systems and power converters intended to be used in datacenter and/or energy storage applications
- Work closely with electronics and mechanical design engineers to develop low cost high efficiency magnetics components (inductors, transformers, etc.
- Start to finish ownership of magnetic components from specification to design, prototype, testing and manufacturing
- Create drawings to specify transformers and magnetics for use in products
- Collaborate with suppliers to reduce cost and/or improve performance of the specified magnetics
- Research new trends and materials in magnetics that can lead to product improvements
- Troubleshoot product design and quality issues
Your background
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
- 8 plus years experience with magnetic component designs for low frequency power systems and high frequency power electronic converters
- Solid understanding of electro-magnetic theory, properties of magnetic materials and winding techniques for high frequency magnetic components
- Good understanding of thermal, mechanical and packaging challenges associated with design of magnetics
- Experience with core selection, winding design, conductor selection (Litz/Foil/Solid/PCB), loss modeling and loss characterization in inductors and transformers
- Familiarity with power converter and electro-magnetic circuit simulation tools (Maxwell, Ansys etc.) a plus
- Knowledge of UL and CE electrical safety requirements relevant to the design of magnetic components
- Sound knowledge of magnetics designs and the power distribution market
- Experience with electrical distribution components such as breakers, contactors, and fuses
- Experience understand electrical faults and fault coordination
- Candidates must already have a work authorization that would permit them to work for ABB in the US
