The Institute of Zoology and Anthropology at the University of Göttingen is offering a

Research Assistant (PhD position)

with 65% of a full position. Regular working hours will currently be 25.87 hours per week with a limited contract of 3 years. The position should be filled as soon as possible. Salary: Pay grade E13 TV-L.

The position is part of the DFG-funded project “Biodiversity Exploratories: Litter Links – Forest Soil Food Webs”.

Your duties
The PhD project forms part of a larger project investigating the response of soil animal communities to forest land-use intensity and management. The PhD project will focus on the response of soil animal communities to strong disturbances such as forest gap formation and placement of deadwood. Energy flux through soil food webs will be investigated using state-of-the-art techniques such as compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids. Assembly processes of soil animal communities will be investigated combining community phylogenetics and trait-based approaches.

Your profile
  • You hold a completed master’s/diploma degree in ecology or a closely related field.
  • You have a research focus on arthropods and/or soil fauna, and are interested in the structure and functioning of soil food webs.
  • Previous experience in field and laboratory research is of advantage.
  • Experience in using phylogenetic methods for analyzing animal community assembly processes is of advantage.
  • You have experience in statistical methods and you are familiar in using R.
  • You have good oral and written English language skills.
  • You are willing to collaborate with other researchers in the project.
