Jobbeschreibung

Technical University Darmstadt is an autonomous university with broad research excellence, an interdisciplinary profile, and a clear focus on engineering as well as information and communication technology. It is one of Europe’s leading AI hotspots (see csrankings.org), hosts a unit in the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS, ellis.eu), as well as the Konrad Zuse School of Excellence in Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELIZA, eliza.school). The Department of Computer Science is one of the most visible departments of TU Darmstadt and regularly ranks among the best CS departments in Germany.

The Visual Inference Lab – led by Prof. Stefan Roth, Ph.D. – at the Department of Computer Science of Technical University Darmstadt is offering a position as

Research Assistant / PhD (all genders)

starting at the next possible date. The position is initially limited to three years but can be extended by at most two more years. The position is classified according to pay group 13 of the TU Darmstadt collective agreement (TV-TU Darmstadt).

The Visual Inference Lab (www.visinf.tu-darmstadt.de) carries out leading research in various areas of computer vision with an emphasis on using and developing (deep) learning approaches and statistical methods. We develop models and algorithms, e.g., for visual scene analysis and understanding, motion estimation from videos, object recognition and tracking, image synthesis, as well as image restoration. Furthermore, we work on the foundations of deep learning in computer vision, including learning with limited supervision, explainable AI, and probabilistic deep learning. Our open and internationally oriented team has access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the fortytwo GPU supercomputer of hessian.AI, enabling outstanding research. TU Darmstadt is one of the leading technical universities in Germany and is one of Europe’s strongest institutions in artificial intelligence.

Your tasks:

Possible research topics include explainable AI for computer vision, probabilistic deep learning in vision, and unsupervised deep models, among others. In addition to the position’s focus on research, teaching duties (assisting with courses and supervision of B.Sc./M.Sc. theses) are also part of the job profile.

Your profile:

  • Outstanding university science degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) at a leading university in computer science, cognitive science, (applied) mathematics, electrical engineering, physics, or a related discipline
  • Advanced knowledge of computer vision, machine learning, and/or cognitive science is beneficial. More important, however, are outstanding mathematical and analytical skills, as well as programming skills
  • High intrinsic motivation, reliability, creativity, as well as the ability to discuss, formulate, and present scientific results in English
  • Significant potential for outstanding, independent research on challenging scientific problems as well as the ability for teamwork

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the duties likewise enables the scientific qualifications of the candidate.

Technical University of Darmstadt intends to increase the number of female employees and encourages female candidates to apply. In case of equal qualifications applicants with a degree of disability of at least 50 or equal will be given preference. Part-time employment is generally possible.

Application:

Your application should contain a cover letter, your curriculum vitae, as well as diplomas and transcripts (Master’s, Bachelor’s, and high school). Your cover letter should discuss your motivation and qualifications for the position. Moreover, please name at least two references, who would be willing to supply letters of recommendation. Please send electronic applications (in the form of a single PDF), referencing the code no. 147, to Prof. Stefan Roth, Ph.D. (email: applications@visinf.tu-darmstadt.de).

By submitting your application, you agree that your data may be stored and processed for the purpose of filling the vacancy. You can find our privacy policy on our webpage.
