About:

Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. Thanks to its location in the Rhine-Main science region, the university can unfold to its full potential and showcase its innovative power and dynamism. Its status as a comprehensive university allows for multidisciplinary learning and teaching and has great potential for internationally renowned, interdisciplinary research. Almost all of its institutes are located on a single campus close to the Mainz city center – creating a lively academic culture for researchers, teaching staff, and students from every continent.

The Institute of Physics at the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science invites applications for the position of

University Professor in Theoretical Elementary-Particle Physics

beginning on October 1st,2024.
Salary grade W 2 LBesG | Civil servant ( tenured)

Tasks and expectations:

We seek to appoint a researcher of international repute in Theoretical elementary-particle physics with established potential for outstanding future contributions to the field. Strong expertise is expected in one or more research areas of particular importance in contemporary high-energy physics, such as effective quantum field theories, flavor physics, collider physics, and precision calculations. The successful candidate should complement and extend the existing research activities in Theoretical particle and astro-particle physics in Mainz. Close collaboration is desired with the research groups in the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence, which explores profound questions on the structure of matter, fundamental interactions, and their relevance to the physics of the universe.
The appointment requires participation in teaching activities in the Faculty of Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science, where the field of theoretical physics needs to be covered in its full breadth. Applicants should have initial teaching experience and be prepared to further develop their pedagogical commitment and didactic skills.

Requirements:

  • In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in Section 49 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.
  • The prerequisites for application are a university degree, a PhD in physics, and a proven record of outstanding scientific achievements with international reach, including original research publications in leading scientific journals. Teaching and management experience as well as the successful acquisition of third-party funds are desirable.
  • If not already extant, applicants must acquire at least Level C1 proficiency in German according to the CEFR within three years of taking up the position, to teach in German.

The state of Rhineland-Palatinate and JGU are committed to close personal mentoring of students and therefore expect teaching staff to have a strong presence at the university. A cooperative, team-oriented and proactive work attitude, strong communication skills, and the willingness to assume responsibility – including further professional development in accordance with JGU’s leadership guidelines – is also expected.

What we have to offer:

JGU firmly supports making family and career compatible and promotes its employees’ further professional development with an extensive human resources development offer.

JGU is diverse and welcomes qualified applications from people with varied backgrounds.

JGU aims to increase the number of women in research and teaching and therefore encourages female researchers to apply.

Candidates with severe disabilities and appropriate qualifications will be given priority.

The interviews, presentations and sample lectures will most likely take place in June 2024
