Job description

Within the framework of the DFG-funded Research Training Group "Translational Evolutionary Research", a
PhD position is offered at the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology at the Rubner Institute. The Research Training Group is a joint initiative of Kiel University, the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, the Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel (GEOMAR), the Research Center Borstel (Leibniz Lung Center), the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) and the Max Rubner Institute Kiel (MRI). The GRK offers an internationally competitive research environment with state-of-the-art equipment. You will be responsible for research on the contribution of the evolutionary human genotype (FUT2 genotype) to the diversity of the human gut microbiome, in particular with regard to the occurrence of opportunistic pathogenic enterobacteria. In addition, phage preparations are to be developed that are able to successfully reduce these bacteria in food or in the gut microbiome.

Your profile

Mandatory requirements:

  • Completed Master's degree in biology or ecotrophology
  • Experience with microbiological and molecular biological work
  • Knowledge in handling pathogenic microorganisms at the biological safety level 2
  • Experience in the field of microbiome research
  • Bioinformatics knowledge including knowledge of analysing genomics and 16S metagenomics data


Preferable are:

  • Knowledge of working with bacteriophages
  • Experience in the preparation of samples for high-throughput sequencing
  • Knowledge of R for statistical analysis of bioinformatics data
  • Experience with Linux systems
  • Knowledge in the field of comparative genomics
  • Knowledge of anaerobic work


Aside from independent and responsible working methods, as well as the ability for inter and intra disciplinary collaboration, a high degree of motivation, personal commitment, team spirit and a willingness to cooperate with colleagues and other institutions are also required. We expect basic knowledge of the German language.

Our offer

We are offering subject to confirmation by the research funding body a temporary, 38,5 months full -time position at the Kiel location of the Max Rubner-Institut. The weekly working hours are presently 39,00 hours . The employment contract is subject to the regulations of the civil service collective wage agreement (TVöD-Bund). Payment of remuneration will be made according to pay grade 13 TVöD if personal and tariff requirements are fulfilled.
