Primary Job Function:
The Principal Packaging Scientist, Product Design and Development (PDD) within Innovation & Development (I&D) is responsible for global packaging development within Abbott Established Pharmaceutical Division‘s (EPD) brands and categories.
As a key Packaging Scientist primarily in individual contributor role, they will act as a subject matter expert (SME) to lead ideation and innovation for providing packaging solutions aligned with Therapeutic areas. Packaging technical know-how to drive projects using best practices to provide multifaceted designs. They will work collaboratively with I&D, Commercial, Technology & Operations. The job will have a specific focus on long term material circularity, fit for purpose designs & material science. The job requires management of external partners that participate in the I&D process. The job requires a passion for diving into data to discover stories and insights in addtion to sharing knowledge to up-skill customers and better our product.

Core Job Responsibilities:
• Responsible for packaging development and packaging sustainability within Abbott I&D
• Provide technical knowledge to initiate & implement packaging projects, packaging innovation, and proposes new packaging for margin and sustainability initiatives with the operations and procurement teams.
• Works cross-functionally to define project objectives, milestones, packaging user research methodologies, designs research plans, prototypes and tests.
• Leads key packaging technical assessments to drive clear packaging & qualification scope.
• Creates and manages SOPs and processes for packaging assessment.
• Ensures user studies are conducted with informed consent and medical oversight.
• Analyzes research data to understand product acceptance, preference and emotional connections.
• Participates and leads the usage of innovation methodologies like design thinking for determining new opportunities.
• Uses behavioural understanding to direct product and project development.
• Responsible for the setup and operation of assigned equipment within the design centre.
• Participates in the global innovation process to help generate new product & claims with tangible benefits based on consumer insights, patients & HCP needs.
• Helps drives and stipulates intellectual property within EPD together with IP department.
• Ensures clear communication within project teams, therapeutic area teams and departmental functions.
Supervisory/Management Responsibilities:
• Represents packaging, product design and product development within project teams.
• Ability to mentor other scientists and engineers.
• Maintains relationships and can work with Contract Research Organizations (CROs)
Position Accountability/Scope:
• Reports to the Director, Packaging & Design, PDD.
• Supports product and device development within I&D.
Minimum Education:
- Master of Science- Packaging or PG Packaging Technology from Indian Institute of Packaging / SIES/IIT.
- Minimum Experience 8 & Max 18 years in allied function- Pharmaceuticals/ FMCG/Packaging Designs & Development.
Minimum Experience/Training Required:
- Technical Packaging knowledge, design, prototyping, packaging development processes and packing machine know how.
- The ability to undertake product design testing, analyse data and translate consumer insights to technical solutions.
- Must have excellent communications & presentation skills with the ability to interface with management at all levels and within multifunctional project teams.
- Hands-on experience on AutoCAD, Mould engineering, Medical Device/Drug-Device combination is preferred.
