Jobbeschreibung

Work group:

IBI -7 – Strukturbiochemie

Area of research:

PHD Thesis

Job description:

Your Job:

Misfolding and aggregation of proteins is the associated with numerous neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson`s, Alzheimer`s and Creutzfeld-Jacob. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy is a method that makes it possible to obtain structural information at atomic resolution even for misfolded and disordered biological macromolecules. Modern methods such as fast sample rotation (ultrafast MAS ) and sensitivity enhancement using hyperpolarization by DNP (Dynamic Nuclear Polarization), offer the possibility to perform NMR spectroscopy with very high MAS rotation frequencies up to 100 kHz, to obtain new insights into protein folding processes as well as protein-ligand interactions.
Your future scope of work includes:

  • Characterization of aggregating proteins using state-of-the-art solid-state NMR spectroscopy
  • Biochemical expression and purification of proteins
  • Development of new solid-state NMR based methods (with and without DNP amplification) for structural characterization of misfolded proteins

Your Profile:

  • University degree (Master) in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, biophysics or a related field
  • Basic knowledge in NMR spectroscopy and/or EPR spectroscopy is desired
  • Basic knowledge of protein expression and purification is a plus
  • Good knowledge in physics and/or biochemistry
  • Good English and computer skills
  • Good ability to work in a team

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

  • An interesting and innovative research topic at the interface between biophysics and molecular biology
  • Profound training in NMR -based structural biology, biophysics and protein biochemistry
  • Excellent scientific and technical infrastructure – optimal conditions for a successful doctorate
  • A highly motivated research group as well as an international and interdisciplinary working environment in one of the largest research institutions in Europe, located in the city triangle Cologne-Aachen-Düsseldorf
  • Continuous professional support by your scientific supervisor
  • PhD at the University of Düsseldorf
  • Participation in national and international conferences as well as in interdisciplinary seminars
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g. through an extensive range of training courses; a structured program of continuing education and networking opportunities specifically for doctoral researchers via JuDocS, the Jülich Center for Doctoral Researchers and Supervisors: www.fz-juelich.de/en/judocs
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g. through our International Advisory Service

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years. Pay in line with 50% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment ("Christmas bonus"). Further information on doctoral degrees at Forschungszentrum Jülich including our other locations is available at: www.fz-juelich.de/gp/Careers_Docs

We welcome applications from people with diverse backgrounds, e.g. in terms of age, gender, disability, sexual orientation / identity, and social, ethnic and religious origin. A diverse and inclusive working environment with equal opportunities in which everyone can realize their potential is important to us.

This research center is part of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. With more than 42,000 employees and an annual budget of over € 5 billion, the Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest scientific organisation.
