The English Department of the University of Zurich invites applications for a Research and Teaching Assistantship in the field of English Linguistics, to begin on 1 August 2024. The doctoral position is attached to the Chair for English Linguistics with a focus on Sociolinguistics and Varieties of English around the World (Prof. Daniel Schreier). It is open to candidates with a completed Master's degree who are aiming for a PhD. The position is initially limited to three years, with the possibility of an extension for a further three years.

Your responsibilities

For Research and Teaching Assistants, 50% of the working hours are reserved for research, most notably work on the PhD project, but also for other, related activities such as conference papers, publications, the organization of academic events and applications for external funding. The other 50% are devoted to teaching BA courses (two hours per week, beginning with a course within the "Introduction to English Linguistics” module) as well as small administrative tasks.

Your profile

We are looking for a member of staff with an outstanding MA thesis in the field of English linguistics and high motivation for new research activities associated with the Language Attitudes in the Swiss Anglophone Diaspora (LASAD) project. The successful candidate will have an interest in English sociolinguistics, have didactic skills and enjoy working in a team environment. The candidate will be proficient in verbal, written and interpersonal communication in English and have a competence in German or will commit to acquiring a working knowledge of German during their first two years on the job.
