Jobbeschreibung

City: Freiburg Date: Feb 14, 2024 Master Thesis: "Study on mechanical loads on large-format PV modules"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg, Germany is the largest solar research institute in Europe. With a staff of about 1400, we are committed to promoting a sustainable, economic, secure and socially just energy supply system based on renewable energy sources. We contribute to this through our main research areas of energy provision, energy distribution, energy storage and energy utilization. Through outstanding research results, successful industrial projects, spin-off companies and global collaborations, we are shaping the sustainable transformation of the energy system.

Our "Degradation analysis & modeling" group analyzes the long-term stability and reliability of photovoltaic (PV) modules and associated components. For this purpose, we carry out various ageing tests on PV modules and analyze the effects of stress on their functionality and stability. Due to the constantly evolving module technology and module design, there is a strong interest in adapting the ageing tests and, if necessary, in working on proposals for standard adaptations.

In the last few years, more and more breakages have been reported on the front and rear glass of PV modules in the field. The reasons for this can be varied and are often due to a combination of influences. Currently, for example, it cannot be ruled out that, in addition to the module size, the mounting configuration and the loads caused by wind and other climatic influences, fluctuations in the material quality, especially of the glass, are also partly responsible for the increased number of failures. As part of a master's thesis, the effect of mechanical loads on large-format (>2.5 m²) PV modules available on the market is to be investigated. On the one hand, the focus is on the glass prestressing and the resulting failure loads during homogeneous (idealized) mechanical load scenarios. Furthermore, load cases that more realistically represent the conditions in the field with inhomogeneous, asymmetric and torsional loads are to be investigated in more detail. The load profiles for this are determined by a neighboring group using finite element modeling (FEM) simulators.

We are looking for a student assistant to join our "Degradation analysis & modeling" group as soon as possible with the opportunity to write a Master's thesis.

What you will do

  • Your training will focus on mechanical load tests and glass stability.
  • You will participate in the execution of mechanical load tests for the simulation of homogeneous and inhomogeneous as well as asymmetric wind and snow loads and conventional tests with characterization measurements (e.g. prestressing of glass with a polariscope, photography, electroluminescence).
  • You will be involved in evaluating the measurement results in the context of finite element modeling (FEM) simulations created by a partner group here at the institute.
  • Part of your work will be the evaluation and processing of all data obtained for your final thesis

What you bring to the table

  • You study natural sciences, engineering, materials science or a similar subject.
  • The master's thesis would preferably combine with an internship or be longer than 6 months.
  • Experience in the field of materials science is an advantage.
  • Integrating yourself into your team and working together to achieve common goals is important to you.
  • You work on your own responsibility and with commitment.
  • You are able to cope with challenges and do not give up until you have achieved the desired results.
  • You are familiar with MS Office.
  • You have worked with data analysis software such as Origin and Python.
  • You are at level C1 - C2 to speak and write in English.

What you can expect

  • You work with one of the most popular employers on an eye-to-eye level with the best.
  • Open-minded colleagues are happy to welcome new talent into their team.
  • We offer flexible working time models and give you the opportunity to work from time to time from home.
  • We foster a cooperative working atmosphere and open communication.
  • We value equal opportunities and make room for diversity.
  • We offer attractive sports and health programs and after-work activities.

The salary depends on the degree level of the university education.

This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.

Interested? Apply online now. We look forward to getting to know you!
