Jobbeschreibung

City: Kassel Date: Feb 13, 2024 Master Thesis on the topic "Resolution enhancement of satellite irradiation measurements"

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 30 800 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.0 billion euros.

Fraunhofer IEE in Kassel researches in the fields of energy economics and energy system technology with a focus on: Energy Informatics, Energy Meteorology and Geoinformation Systems, Energy Economics and System Design, Energy Process Engineering and Storage, Grid Planning and Operation, Grid Stability and Power Converter Technology, and Thermal Energy Technology. Around 450 scientists, employees and students develop solutions for the energy transition and generate around 38 million euros in revenue per year.

What you will do

You’ll work on teaching computers to efficiently automate the very visual (i.e. human) task of predicting small-scale details in large-scale cloud structures viewed by satellites. Your results will improve the estimation of the unique conditions at Germany’s millions of PV sites used e.g. in digital twin models.
The first goal will be to test the effectiveness of super-resolution imaging algorithms, for example, as available via the RetinaNet architecture used in the project VemoSat. Moreover, you may apply your scientific skills and tricks to incorporate information on predictable effects like shadows and the atmospheric motion.

What you bring to the table

  • A special interest in renewable energies
  • Curiosity for how things work
  • Programming proficiency in Python, ideally with machine learning
  • A good understanding of math and physics

What you can expect

The group "Forecasts for Power Systems" works on innovative research questions related to forecasting renewable power generation for the next minutes, hours and days. Such forecasts facilitate the successful integration of renewable energies into the power grid in the planning of power plant deployment, the profitable marketing of the generated electricity, and the optimal, energy-saving use of the various energy sources.

We offer interesting and challenging tasks in various publicly funded and industrial projects as well as a very good working atmosphere.

We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability.

The position is initially limited to 6 months. The monthly working time is between 40 and 80 hours. Remuneration according to the general works agreement for employing assistant staff.

With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
