Development Engineer For Power Electronics (M/F/D)

In our Centre of Competence for Auxiliary Power Systems, we take a leading position in the design and development of auxiliary power converters and the associated electronic components for locomotives, high-speed trains, trams, buses and much more. To strengthen our motivated team, we are looking for a passionate electrical engineer with expertise in power electronics and ideally railway technology.In this role you will be responsible for design of auxiliary power converters for railway, in ABB Traction.

Your responsibilities

• Adapting the design of auxiliary converters for railroad applications due to (obsolete) components that are no longer available on the market and carrying out the associated problem and interface analyses
• Specification of (replacement) components according to customer specifications and product requirements and cooperation with the purchasing department for procurement (electronic components, inductive components, heat sinks, fans, power supply)
• Collaboration in the re-validation of the product after design adaptation
• Adaptation of the electrical interfaces to the subsystems of the inverter including the control software for the inverter with the software developers
• Electrical and thermal design, including simulation of the circuit in Matlab/Simulink (Design to Cost and Design for Manufacturing/Maintenance, RAMS)
• Creating and coordinating the specifications for the design and actively supporting the design implementation and realization in prototype construction
• Carrying out electrical and thermal tests in the laboratory and on the vehicle, type test of the inverter in the Power Lab depending on the scope and type of redesign carried out
• Commissioning in the laboratory and in the target vehicle environment
• Adaptation of the documentation accompanying development, including preparation of training documentation
• Supporting the technical sales team with regard to obsolescence-driven customer inquiries

Your background

• Successful university degree as an engineer specializing in electrical engineering with a focus on power electronics
• Professional experience in the development of power electronic devices in the fields of auxiliary systems or railroad technology
• Experience with the design and testing of power electronic circuits in IGBT technology in the power range up to several 100 kW
• Experience in the use of SiC semiconductors
• Experience in simulation with Matlab/Simulink or other tools
• Very good written and spoken German and English skills
• Cooperative, solution-oriented approach and good written and spoken communication skills
• Independent, goal-oriented and analytical way of working, flexibility, high level of commitment
