Consultant Investor Advisory

Our global award winning and market leading Business and Investor Advisory (BIA) team provides technical, commercial and sustainable advisory for investors and project developers in the energy transition. We do so at strategic level – where and in what to invest – , in live transactions – sell-side and buy-side due diligence, and at portfolio level – how can investors convert existing portfolios towards the needs of the energy transition.

Currently we are rapidly growing our recently established BIA team in Amsterdam that focusses on the EU and predominantly Benelux and wider northwestern Europe.

The Opportunity
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering projects to private sector investor clients and public sector bodies. Projects may range from due diligence to market assessments, corporate strategy, business cases and feasibility studies and sustainable investment advisory. Project work will require a range of quantitative and qualitative analysis skills including:
• Undertaking economic and financial analysis, demand and revenue forecasting, market assessments, asset evaluations, and providing commercial advice
• Developing Excel-based commercial and financial models to support project analysis and advice.
• Liaising with experts within and outside the organisation on complex issues
• Preparing and supporting delivery of reports and presentations to clients.
• Developing and maintaining client relationships, and supporting business development, project proposals and project delivery;

Our projects generally last between 4-10 weeks meaning in a year you can work on up to 8-10 different projects across a variety of assets and geographies, giving you exposure to several different assets and clients. Our projects are fast-paced and provide you with opportunities to develop quickly whilst gaining a range of experience.

Your background
You should have a technical understanding and interest in any or, preferably more, of the following energy transition assets:
• Hydrogen value chain and hydrogen derivatives like e-Methanol, green ammonia, and synthetic aviation fuels
• Biofuels
• Biogas, biomethane
• Battery manufacturing and/or storage
• Low emission mobility like EV charging, fuel cell solutions, application of renewable fuels
• Responsibilities:

You will also be able to demonstrate some general commercial, economic and/or regulatory understanding in these sectors. Previous experience in working with infrastructure investors is a plus.

Your responsibilities

  • Lead as Project Manager complex energy transition Technical Due Diligence assignments from proposal to successful completion, in line with Arup risk management procedures. These Due Diligence remits can have commercial and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) scope.
  • Take a leading role in client engagement and business development, providing new client relations and assignment leads.
  • Collaborate with wider Arup Netherlands and international teams to further develop our Business and Investor Advisory offering.
  • Line management of up to 3 to 5 more junior staff

Your profile
You can identify yourself with our values and you want to collaborate with us in shaping a better world with iconic and innovative projects. To maintain Arup’s high-quality standards, we would expect you to meet the following minimum criteria:

  • A Bachelor/ Master’s degree in commercial, economic, or financial analysis, and/or relevant working experience in a related role
  • Typically over 10 years of professional experience, with a minimum of 5 years in Technical Due Diligence and wider investor and strategic advisory.
  • Core skills in commercial and market analysis, problem solving, and an ability to adapt and apply these to a range of projects.
  • Delivered at least 10+ Technical Due Diligence projects
  • Excellent communication skills , written and spoken Dutch & English at least B2 level and ability to distil complex analysis into key messages and develop these into a coherent narrative. You will also have responsibility to present findings and discuss these with clients.
  • Experience in reporting for international finance markets
  • Adaptability and flexibility to work on projects with relatively short deadlines, with changing scope and focus as information and analysis evolves.
  • Desire and capability to engage in business development and client relationship building.
  • Keenness for emerging, sustainable infrastructure and industrial sectors
  • Affinity translating technical solutions into bankable and sustainable projects
  • Highly motivated, proactive and willing to take on new challenges

Very nice to have:
• Nordic language skills (Danish, Norwegian, Finnish)
• Detailed understanding of sustainable investment advisory
• Detailed experience in commercial Due Diligence and/or market studies
