Assistant professorships in upper secondaryschool leadership

Centre for Upper Secondary School Research at the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science, University of Southern Denmark, Faculty of Humanities, invites applications for two positions as assistant professors in educational science with a special focus on educational leadership in upper secondary school and other upper secondary education. The positions are at SDU’s campus in Odense and available from September 1st, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. The assistant professor positions are full-time positions with the possibility of continuation into associate professorships upon completion of the Assistant professorships.
The successful candidates are expected, with reference to national and international developments in educational leadership and the latest research in the field, to contribute to a better understanding of the conditions for and the execution of educational leadership in upper secondary school and other upper secondary education, and how different leadership conditions affect the commitment, self-understanding and success of educational leaders and teachers.
Research in, for and about educational leadership in upper secondary school and other upper secondary education is of significant value for the execution of educational leadership, as the knowledge produced can help leaders to do a better job and lead to development in schools and in educational leadership training. Thus, the successful candidates are also expected to disseminate their research via various channels of mediation, study programmes at the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science and through collaboration with partners of Centre for Upper Secondary School Research.
Centre for Upper Secondary School Research and the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science represent use of a wide range of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods. The successful candidates are expected to be able to contribute to methodological discussions and developments within research in educational leadership in upper secondary school and other upper secondary education.
The position
The assistant professors are expected to contribute to the University of Southern Denmark's core activities within research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. Specifically, the assistant professors will contribute to research and teaching at Centre for Upper Secondary School Research and at the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science by teaching and supervising students at master’s degree level or in Master Degree Programmes, as well as contributing to the further development of the field of educational leadership through research of high national and international quality.
Areas of work include:
  • Contributing to the development of a systematic knowledge base on educational leadership in upper secondary school and other upper secondary education
  • Raising awareness of existing knowledge and research results on educational leadership nationally and internationally
  • Applying and developing high-quality research methods to contribute to research in, for and about upper secondary school and upper secondary education
  • Conducting research at the highest international level and making significant scientific contributions to theoretical and empirical research within educational leadership in upper secondary school and upper secondary education
  • Establishing an international perspective on educational leadership in upper secondary school and upper secondary education
  • Engaging in knowledge exchange and research and development collaboration with upper secondary schools, other upper secondary educational institutions, and additional stakeholders.
  • Teaching in the department's MA courses and Master Degree Programmes
The focus of the positions is educational leadership in upper secondary school and upper secondary education, but it will be an advantage if applicants could also supplement already existing competencies within Centre for Upper Secondary School Research, and for example contribute to the pedagogical/didactic area within e.g., mathematical, economic and/or technological subjects.
In addition, the assistant professors are expected to actively engage in writing grant applications relevant to the field of research.
In addition to the formal qualifications, applicants are also expected to document:
  • Knowledge of upper secondary school and upper secondary education
  • Knowledge of national and international research within educational leadership
  • Knowledge of and skills within relevant theories and methods in relation to educational leadership in  upper secondary school and other upper secondary education
  • Experience in participating in national and possibly international networks and collaborations
  • Experience with dissemination of research and knowledge exchange
  • Experience with research-based teaching and supervision
Applicants are expected to be able to communicate and publish in both Danish and English.
About Centre for Upper Secondary School Research
Centre for Upper Secondary School Research at the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science, University of Southern Denmark has a significant and leading national position in upper secondary school and upper secondary education research, but also has a strong international orientation. The assistant professors are expected to contribute to further developing this position with a focus on educational leadership. Applicants are recommended to describe their visions for the future development of the field.
Centre for Upper Secondary School Research is organized around a close synergy between research, development and teaching and has a solid collaboration with upper secondary schools and upper secondary educational institutions. Applicants are encouraged to describe their experiences with and ideas about such collaborations.
It is imperative that the assistant professors participate in the daily activities at Centre for Upper Secondary School Research and the Department of Design, Media and Educational Science, such as research and teaching activities and communities as well as organizational forums.

Application, salary and conditions of employment, etc.
The successful applicant will be employed in accordance with the agreement between the Ministry of Finance and AC (the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations), Cirkulære om overenskomst for Akademikere i staten 2019 (the document only exists in Danish).
An assistant professorship is a 3-year position. Employment stops automatically by the end of the period. It applies for all positions that they will only cover teaching requirements from related areas, including interdisciplinary teaching activities and Cand. Negot. courses.
To qualify for the position, you must have completed a PhD-degree by the time of employment.

Applicants for an associate professorship at the Faculty of Humanities are requested to submit a teaching portfolio with the application as documentation for teaching experience as well as supervision qualifications. Please read more here.

Please always include a copy of original diploma/certificates.  We only accept files in pdf-format no more than 10 MB per file. In case you have more than one file per field you need to combine the pdf-files into a single file, as each field handles only one file. We do not accept zip-files, jpg or other image files. All pdf-files must be unlocked and allow binding and may not be password protected.
Applications will be assessed by an assessment committee and the applicant will receive the part of the evaluation that concerns him/her. The assessment report will subsequently be forwarded to the Head of Department who will assemble an appointments committee. An interview may form part of the overall assessment of the applicants' qualifications.   
The committee may request additional information, and if so, it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the necessary material.
If the application does not meet the requirements mentioned above, the Faculty of Humanities may reject your application without further notice. Applications received after the deadline will neither be considered nor evaluated.
