Postdoctoral research position in translational viral immunity (f/m/x)
Laboratory of Experimental Immunology - Institute of Virology

full-time; limited for 2 years according to WissZeitVG Third-party funded project

We are a very committed translational research group (Klein lab - Laboratory of Experimental Immunology) dedicated to the fundamentals of the human immune response to infectious agents. We are particularly focused on the identification and evaluation of antibodies targeting viruses, including HIV-1 and SARS-CoV-2. These antibodies and other anti-infective approaches are tested for their in vivo efficacy in humanized mouse models of infection. Our group is located in the middle of the campus of the University Hospital Cologne in the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMMC) where we have access to state-of-the-art BSL-1 to BSL-3 laboratories and several excellent core facilities and in-house services. Your experimental work will range from the generation of humanized mice to long-term virological and immunological analyses. Your contribution will drive the development of novel approaches for prevention and treatment of infectious diseases.

Your tasks
  • Designing and executing research studies focusing on the isolation and characterization of broad neutralizing antibodies (bNAbs) targeting infectious pathogens (e.g. HIV-1, SARS-CoV-2)
  • Performing experiments within third-party funded projects in a biosafety level S1 and S3** mouse facility
  • Generation of animal models, performing experiments, obtaining in vivo samples (e.g. bleeding), documentation and data management
  • Correspondence with national and international collaborative partners
  • Conduction of immunologic and virologic assays and methods, including primary cells, cell culture, virus cultures, PCR, cloning, flow cytometry, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, tissue sampling from mice
  • Ensuring highest standards of quality through keeping detailed experimental protocols and records and writing research reports
  • Participation in the preparation and submission of manuscripts
Your Profile
  • You hold a PhD, M.D. or M.D. / Ph.D. degree in molecular biology, virology, immunology, or equivalent with a visible publication record
  • Experience in handling of laboratory animals (FELASA-B certificate or higher is essential) and with infectious agents
  • Experience with immunological methods (e.g., FACS, qPCR, ELISA)
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and solve problems
  • Structured, solution-oriented and determined
  • Execution of experiments in a highly detail-oriented and reliable manner
  • Communicative and cooperative in working with interdisciplinary research teams (doctoral students, post-docs, technical assistants, animal caretakers, physicians, collaborators)
  • Excellent English communication skills, both spoken and written
  • Professional project management experience would be beneficial
Our Offer
  • A highly committed research group with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, physicians, technical assistants, project managers and study coordinators
  • Diverse, challenging, and relevant work in an interesting, dynamic and high-quality research environment
  • Full access to state-of-the-art technology platforms and facilities to carry out cutting edge translational research
  • National and international collaborations, both academic and with industry
  • Personal development within the group and through further training
