Jobbeschreibung

As a tertiary and quaternary level provider of medical care, the University Hospital of RWTH Aachen combines patient-oriented medicine and care, teaching and research at an international level. The entire spectrum of medical care is provided through 36 specialist departments, 33 institutes and six interdisciplinary units. The co-location of patient care, research and teaching in a central building offers the best conditions for intensive interdisciplinary exchange and close clinical and scientific networking. Highly qualified teams of doctors, nurses and scientists work collaboratively to optimise the healthcare provision of our local, regional, national and international patients. Around 9,000 employees ensure that our care delivery is patient-oriented medicine and surpasses the highest quality standards. With 1,400 beds, the university hospital treats around 50,000 inpatient and 200,000 outpatient cases per year.

The Clinic of Cardiology, Angiology and Internal Intensive Care Medicine (Medical Clinic I) - project "The role of immune cells during transition from NAFLD to NASH to cardiovascular disease " within the framework of the IZKF joint research project "Metabolic injury as driver of organ-dependent phase transition" are seeking a PhD Student (f/m/d).

The position starts as soon at possible and is a part-time position (25,03 hours/week/ 65%) funded for the period of 3 years (IZKF funding).

Patients with NAFLD and NASH display a considerably heightened cardiovascular risk profile (including incidence of heart failure) compared to patients without NAFLD/NASH. Despite an appreciation of this risk, the underlying mechanisms how fatty liver disease directly aggravates CVD and risk are not understood. The overall aim of this project is therefore to improve our understanding how fatty liver disease increases cardiovascular risk. To this end we will explore the hepatic contribution of NAFLD/NASH during phase transition from acute MI to ischemic heart failure. We hypothesize that during NAFLD/NASH proinflammatory immune networks between the liver and the heart aggravate MI-induced cardiac inflammation thus worsening myocardial healing and promoting ischemic heart failure. Based on the literature and our preliminary findings, GLP-1 receptor agonists might represent a promising therapeutic approach to protect patients with fatty liver disease from cardiovascular complications. The proposed project aims to unravel the functional role of fatty liver disease during the development of cardiovascular disease (in particular phase transition from myocardial infarction to heart failure).
