Jobbeschreibung

Work group:

IEK -3 – Techno-ökonomische Systemanalyse

Area of research:

PHD Thesis

Job description:

Your Job:

The generation and usage of green hydrogen play a key role for Europe in the transformation to a greenhouse gas-neutral energy system and thus in meeting European climate protection targets. In particular, the provision of green hydrogen at competitive prices is important for a future clean, secure and affordable energy supply in Europe and Germany. While sustainable and secure hydrogen potentials can be found in Europe, their utilization strongly depends on the generation costs at the respective locations and future intra-European trade dynamics. The aim of this work is to generate site-specific cost-potential curves for green hydrogen generation in Europe and to use these for further analyses of a possible European hydrogen market.
In doing so, you will address different questions, such as: Which locations are suitable for green hydrogen generation in Europe and at what cost can the hydrogen be generated? What is the relationship between supply volume and production costs? How could a European hydrogen market look like and what impact do non-European hydrogen imports have on it? To answer these questions, you perform the following work:

  • Identification of technically and economically suitable sites for green hydrogen production in Europe
  • Modeling, design and operational simulations of electrolysis battery systems
  • Elaboration of site-specific cost-potential curves for green hydrogen in Europe
  • Conceptual design and simulation of a European hydrogen market to derive hydrogen market prices
  • Co-development of an online database for the publication of results
  • Active participation in the scientific-public discourse (e.g. by publishing the results in renowned scientific journals)

Your Profile:

  • A completed Master`s degree in the field of natural or (industrial) engineering, informatics, or a related field of study.
  • Very good knowledge of energy technology, energy economics and energy politics
  • Good programming skills (e.g., Python)
  • High degree of independence and willingness to show great commitment
  • Very reliable and conscientious work style
  • Fluent English or German language skills, both written and spoken.

Our Offer:

We work on the very latest issues that impact our society and are offering you the chance to actively help in shaping the change! We offer ideal conditions for you to complete your doctoral degree:

  • A highly motivated working group as well as an international and interdisciplinary working environment at one of Europe’s largest research establishments
  • The opportunity to complete a doctoral thesis within 3 years through professional supervision and internal support services; time taken to submit the final thesis for the last 16 doctoral students at IEK -3: 2.7-3.4 years
  • A large research campus in the countryside, which offers the best opportunities for networking with colleagues as well as for a sporty balance besides work
  • Outstanding scientific and technical infrastructure
  • Opportunity to participate in (international) conferences and project meetings
  • Continuous scientific mentoring by your scientific advisor(s)
  • Flexible work (location) arrangements, e.g. remote work
  • Further development of your personal strengths, e.g., through an extensive range of training courses; a structured program of continuing education and networking opportunities specifically for doctoral researchers via JuDocS, the Jülich Center for Doctoral Researchers and Supervisors: www.fz-juelich.de/en/judocs
  • 30 days of annual leave and provision for days off between public holidays and weekends (e.g., between Christmas and New Year)
  • Working for one of the best employers in Germany – 6th place in the Glassdoor award for employee satisfaction: www.glassdoor.de/Award/Beste-Arbeitgeber-Deutschland-LST_KQ0,29.htm
  • Targeted services for international employees, e.g., through our International Advisory Service

The position is for a fixed term of 3 years. Pay in line with 75% of pay group 13 of the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD-Bund) and additionally 60 % of a monthly salary as special payment ("Christmas bonus").
