Become one of our 30 International Trainees at Vattenfall. Each of the trainee positions is unique, linked to a department within a specific business area and a working location. This means that each position has its own specific responsibilities, challenges and matching profile.
Next to your personal development in this unique position you will be enjoying one year of all we have to offer. Your trainee year will be filled with meet-ups with your international trainee team with likeminded individuals. You will be meeting up virtually to work on assignments and live during four seminar weeks where you will be visiting our power plants and growing your superpowers with a variety of trainings.
Your role as a Trainee – System Design Engineer
Would you like to work with future oriented technology and have access to cutting edge simulation tools?
The System Design department is the competence centre for technical and financial evaluation of offshore wind farms, including the entire energy system and innovative technologies like hydrogen.
"We are responsible for further expanding our in-house developed design tools, utilizing advanced mathematical optimization techniques and co-simulation of multiparameter physical models. Moreover, we operate our models to assess and optimize the design of our future offshore wind farms, mastering the full complexity of each component while maintaining a holistic view of the full system."
Your daily activities:
- Navigating through the millions of possible combinations of technologies, wind farm layouts and financial strategies, to narrow the design down to a few optimal scenarios – the ones that have the highest potential for becoming a winning future wind farm
- Being involved in the improvement and automation of the entire tool chain and processes
- Using our industry-leading model framework to design, analyse and optimize future offshore wind farms
- Working closely with a wide range of stakeholders: modelling experts, product line teams and Technical Project Managers to guide business decisions and create winning bids
- Calculating and reporting of the value of applied technologies
- Driving the direction of our wind farm designs and portfolio and making impact assessments of new technologies on a product, park and system level
Location
You will be working in the department System Design and the position is located either in Kolding in Denmark, Amsterdam in the Netherlands or London in the UK. You will travel to other Vattenfall offices and sites.

As a Trainee - System Design Engineer you recognize yourself in the following:
- Strong analytical skills, to dig deep into advanced modelling methods and understands the business impact of results and see the bigger picture
- Excellent communication skills; being able to communicate a technically complex message to a wide range of stakeholders
- Good understanding of financial mechanisms and business cases is a plus
- Basic understanding of programming (MATLAB/Python) is a plus
- Show initiative, can cope with uncertainty, and can both challenge and support the people around you
- You have a can-do mentality and can combine this with an analytical and structured approach while working on many things at the same time
- You quickly pick up new skills and enjoy continuous learning and improvement
- You have an innovative mindset and can see yourself working in a department where we value entrepreneurship, a pragmatic approach and helpfulness in our daily work
- You have a positive mindset and think in solutions rather than in problems; you thrive in complex, international/intercultural, and interdisciplinary environments
You are our ideal trainee if you are a recent graduate with an academic degree or you graduate before September 2023. You are fluent in English. Skills in other world languages can be a merit. You are willing to relocate for possible assignments throughout the organization. And of course, you identify yourself with our principles: active, open, positive and safe.

Selection period starts after the application period is closed with online tests followed by interviews in March. An assessment is also part of the recruitment process and will take place in April. The recruitment process will be finalized in May. The last step will be a pre-employment screening. Starting date of the Vattenfall International Trainee Programme will be September 4th 2023.
